Issue Date: | 9-Jun-2023 | Date: | 2023 | Publication information: | Science (New York, N.Y.) 2023-06-09; 380(6649) | Abstract: | Aging is associated with changes in circulating levels of various molecules, some of which remain undefined. We find that concentrations of circulating taurine decline with aging in mice, monkeys, and humans. A reversal of this decline through taurine supplementation increased the health span (the period of healthy living) and life span in mice and health span in monkeys. Mechanistically, taurine reduced cellular senescence, protected against telomerase deficiency, suppressed mitochondrial dysfunction, decreased DNA damage, and attenuated inflammaging. In humans, lower taurine concentrations correlated with several age-related diseases and taurine concentrations increased after acute endurance exercise. Thus, taurine deficiency may be a driver of aging because its reversal increases health span in worms, rodents, and primates and life span in worms and rodents. Clinical trials in humans seem warranted to test whether taurine deficiency might drive aging in humans. | URI: | https://ahro.austin.org.au/austinjspui/handle/1/33152 | DOI: | 10.1126/science.abn9257 | ORCID: | 0000-0002-2851-6805 0000-0002-9546-2472 0000-0001-7474-836X 0000-0003-2316-318X 0000-0003-2779-9919 0000-0003-0339-7894 0000-0003-0264-7011 0000-0002-0517-9455 0000-0002-5380-4622 0000-0001-9416-3350 0000-0002-6669-5330 0000-0001-5596-3443 0000-0003-3318-3686 0000-0003-4135-9741 0000-0003-1746-7160 0000-0003-2139-2544 0000-0001-6386-6790 0000-0003-2079-965X 0000-0001-5886-5291 0000-0002-5463-1954 0000-0002-3003-3378 0000-0002-8855-1848 0000-0001-8659-5268 0000-0003-0607-8098 0000-0001-8126-3475 0000-0001-7779-031X 0000-0003-2078-2532 0000-0002-6862-136X 0000-0003-1599-774X 0000-0003-2473-0246 0000-0002-5927-3244 0000-0002-5829-8589 0000-0003-4557-4633 0000-0002-6066-6002 0000-0003-2835-0478 0000-0002-3054-0337 0000-0002-1102-8506 0000-0002-6132-5197 0000-0002-8363-7183 0000-0002-5754-1874 0000-0002-8953-3043 0000-0002-4007-6769 0000-0002-5266-7849 0000-0002-2368-7322 0000-0002-1311-3421 0000-0002-3684-4331 0000-0003-2345-2846 |
